Fiendish Things

about

Reflections in 2019:

Some of my favorite songs are in the category of Fiendish Things. When I don't know what to do with a song's arrangement I like to experiment with percussion. In this case, we tracked the drums individually and made somewhat of sample style patterns out of each piece. When the snare comes in at the end of the song I find it super gratifying. I wish I had done that snare the whole time, but that weird buildup is special.

The lyrics are about a self-absorbed jerk who ends up committing bank fraud because he's a self-absorbed jerk. He's self-aware enough to lean into it though, and some would argue that makes him worse. Typical John Lennon situation, perhaps.

This song features a truly outstanding bass performance from Jonathan Wohl, and remains one of my favorite things on the record.

lyrics

Oh what a mess I made today
Left my clothing strewn about the floor
Along with broken glass and power tools
The little things I should not ignore
Everyone’s gonna step all over my things

Oh what a mess I made today
Sent my woman running for the door
I broke her heart with idle words
And now she’s awfully sore with me
Anyone could step on her
She should be so lucky it was me

With all of these fiendish things I have done
I can not lament, can not repent now
Someone’s gotta be the wicked guy
So why can’t I?

Oh what a mess I made today
Did the daft and tried to rob a bank
Just a small amount, an inside job
While sitting in my office chair
Thought that I could get away
But I made the news today, oh boy
