The End of Me

about

Reflections in 2019:

The End of Me is a mission statement all its own. It has endured with me about as strongly as anything on this album. It's perhaps the song in which I am opening my heart the widest. It has its origins in early 2011 working at Water Music and cribbing lyrics to myself on legal pad. I wrote this song as a conversation between myself and my mother after she one day told me to sit down and relax while I was in the throughs of some arthritis induced hysteria. I can safely say nearly a decade later that arthritis is a supreme bitch of a disorder but I am glad I managed it.

The song is a pledge to myself and to her to keep doing the things in my life that I found important and to not let pain or Hemophilia ultimately get the best of me. Lying down is submission to the disorder at that time, and I wasn't planning to let that happen. I wasn't sure if I would have a musical career at this point either, but thankfully perseverance won out the day and we're moving on to more exciting projects instead of wallowing in place.

This is a song I often perform when making points about chronic pain, chronic illness, or hope. We're all in short supply of that real hope.

lyrics

Lying down will be the end of me, Anna D
Lying down will be the end of me

I know you see the pain when I hit the ground
When it’s time to turn the music down
If silence means it’s fine to come down then

Keep it loud, keep it strong
We can sing along to nothing, soulful mama,
Cos I know you see
That lying down will be the end of me

Lying down will be the end of me, you’ll see
Life’s too short to live in agony

This old guitar’s the only home I know
I can let you in but I won’t let go, so we’ll

Pour another Round of Sound
It’ll wash the tired muscles down
And we’ll float away together, soulful mama,
Cos I know you see

That lying down will truly be
Be the end of me
