about

I've said it before, but this one is a hard one. It does a damn good job of tugging at the heartstrings and choking me up when I listen back.

Annie's Gone was recorded in its entirety in 2014. I had it mixed and mastered in 2019 for release. I wrote the song as part of the grieving process after losing my mother, and I sat on it for nearly 5 years in order to make sure members of my family could have their time to heal emotionally and that I could have mine. I don't know if I'm truly past aspects of my mother's passing. I don't know if I'll ever be past them, but the release of this song represents the spirit of my attempt to heal my heart.

Paul McCartney is a big influence on how I write music, and this song is a study in characters being used to drive the emotional narrative of the song. The lyrics describe people going about their lives while the narrator remarks that the titular Annie has departed. He can't seem to get off that topic and it ultimately means he can't go on about his life. While originally written from my point of view I have come to appreciate how this song also reflects my father's destroyed heart. Losing a parent wrecks your shit. Losing a spouse can't be any easier.

This song is another example of an atypical arrangement with an amount of restraint that I wager some of my peers might not have expected from me. It was important than the refrain of the song not have any extra elements over it. Only next to it. It was meant to take on the sonic sentiment of mourners having their moment with the casket at a wake and then filing into the aisles. I'm particularly proud of the bass line and how it develops through the song to become a driving low C# at the end. Reynolds did a great job with the emotive lead work too.

Samantha Benvissuto did her thing and channeled my sad abstractions and demand for a dead lizard into an incredibly sweet and sad desert scene.

lyrics

Hubbard's in the kitchen writing books again
Denny's playing astronaut pretending he's John Glenn but Annie's gone
Annie's gone
She's gone and moved along, Annie's gone

Anna Deborah Margret
all of five foot two
Dressed up for a party, oh she slept the whole night through
cos Annie's gone, man she's gone
Guess she couldn't say so long

Katie's gone to Harvard, we're not sure where Jack's been
Zoewy's home with Maxwell, ah but Maxwell's out again cos Annie's gone
Man she's gone
She's gone and moved along, the girl is gone
She up and moved along, Annie's gone
