about

This song had been a long, long time coming from me. Something that many people had probed me to write to no avail, but here it finally came. Bleed started out and remained a Nirvana love letter, but topically it was a lot less focused at first. Shouting "my disease won't let me be" over and over in the barn with Polina really clinched it, though. Infact, it was her suggestion that I name a song Bleed in the first place.

I really love the way the harmonies on the chorus turned out, and I love the backup vocals that over 100 people provided. The idea was to make a climactic moment and to have it feel like a pep rally, hence 'give me an h' being the call. I wanted it to feel like some sort of absurdist cheerleading for Hemophilia, because in reality that's what advocacy is. It's being your own biggest cheerleader and bringing relentless energy towards anything you set your laser sights on. I learned this from the countless women who drive the BDC forward.

Thank you, Team Ophelia, and thank you to the tireless efforts of the current and previous women who advocate in the BDC.

lyrics

It’s easy being cynical, you see
It’s easy to be angry and resentful considering the lives we have to lead
Needles in the piggy bank and a burden on society
That’s me!

My disease won’t let me be
Bringing out the worst of me
My disease won’t let me be
When all I ever do is bleed

I really wanna give up on that fight
Considering the option every day and every night
I know that nothing I could ever say could ever take away the pain
I’m coming to appreciate the origin of codependent rage
Give me an H!

My disease won’t let me be
Bringing out the worst of me
My disease won’t let me be
When all I ever do is bleed

When all I ever seem to do is bleed
He-Mo Let’s go!

My disease won’t let me be
Bringing out the worst of me
My disease won’t let me be
When all I ever do is bleed

When all I ever seem to do is bleed
Give me an H!
