about

Borderlines is a lot of things to me. Musically it satisfies my love of alternate time signatures and feedback quite handsomely and draws inspiration equally from bands like Soundgarden and Jawbox as it does from Afrobeat.
Some people say they can't understand how world music factors into my work, but to me, it's best highlighted in the stagnant musical elements. Afrobeat to me is something that pulsates and fills a room without needing to travel beyond it, and Borderlines reflects that by remaining over a droning root note despite shifting rhythms.

From a musical standpoint, it is a beatdown of a song. Johnny has the most relentless drumming and it was important to me that the drums announce that the song means business.

The guitars on this song feature a riff that I wrote as an exercise in fretting with my thumb, and it evolved into a theme that the lead guitar ultimately reflects. The solo was done in one take.

The song is all about anger and stagnancy, and it serves as a prelude to the loose plot of the album.

lyrics

Time fading away: peeling back the minutes every day
Time fading away: borderlines are blurring into gray
Time fading away: we observe a specimen today

Shouting at the void, staring at the walls
Petrie dish in abject disarray
Storm is on the way, storm is on the way
A Crimson tide that can not be allayed

Pride stripped away/ flesh for debts that can not be repaid
Pride stripped away/ the origin of codependent rage

Storm is on the way, storm is on the way
Manifest another sad display
Haven’t seen the sun, haven’t seen a soul
Here I am, but I will not remain

I am the pain, body and mind
I am control gone in time
I am the pain body and mind
I am control gone over time

I am the years yet to pass
Never the first never the last
Hand over hand, draw the lines
Hand over hand, draw the lines
