I Can't Remember Love

Reflections in 2019:

This song started following me around in late 2007. I had the structure composed by late 2009 and a rough demo in place, but I held out for a while. It was one of the songs I was really motivated to workshop at open mics in NYC and with a vocal coach. I think it's a heck of an effort for my abilities as a vocalist at the time, but it's a song I would consider updating in the future. Perhaps updating the lyrics to reflect something further along in who I am now? It has its basis in reality but the song is frustration amplified with a badly timed swear word because I was being pretty hamfisted. Time will tell.

I'm proud of the vibe song achieved. It has a menace and a sex to it from the organs and it's some of my best guitar playing on the album. The guitar solo is one of my favorite moments on RoS because of how much it smolders under the wah.

If I'm critical of this song it's because I believe so strongly in it. I think it reflects my virtues as a songwriter and my shortcomings as a technician at the time to some extent. It doesn't keep me from listening to the song or appreciating what it is but it gives me ideas.

The beginning of the piece is jokingly referred to as a 29/8 meter.

lyrics

That day was a wake up call, I understood I never felt so small.
I had nothing and nothing but you had me.
It started out with an attack and your crocodile tears blurring the facts
As you tried to look so helpless; don't fucking kid yourself.
We started out so loving that’s why it’s such a shame to see you push the blame
away “no it's not me, it's you, it's her”, well now its all of us.

It doesn't take long for me to surmise your condescension isn’t worth the highs
It'll be a cold long day before I can remember love.

I tried to hide myself away
I made damn sure I never saw the light of day again
But you made sure to dig me up.
We made attempts to rebuild what we lost until you changed the plan.
I guess you tried to change my head but all you did was change my mind.

It doesn't take long for me to surmise your condescension isn’t worth the highs
It'll be a cold long day before I can remember love.
Look at yourself when you look in my eyes only then can you realize we're a foot and a half in the grave and I can't remember love.

With all you were supposed to be your faults all turn to heresy
I don't expect for you to change just get the hell away from me.
With everything you were to me you waged a war now it's plain to see.
That you’re no friend of mine
You’re no friend of mine (X4)
