Pass is sort of the red-headed stepchild of this album with its frantic, punky kind of energy. I think that verse is one of the coolest things. I wrote it in 2014, and it reminded me of Bumblefoot, so that felt like a big deal.
Lyrically, the song comes a bit from a mantra that I use when my feelings get a bit too heavy. I was going through a phase with the IDLES album Joy as an Act of Resistance, which has a lot of repetition in its lyrics, so I wanted to emulate that. A bit of that plus some love of the Pixies and B52s gives us that ridiculous take on the chorus
Topically this is another inner monologue song. The album is full of them.
It's a manic inventory of losses and wins mid panic.
lyrics
This is a battle that you have won
This is a battle that you have won
This is a battle that you have won
This is the damage you have done
This is a battle that you have won
This is a battle that you have won
This is a battle that you have won
This is the person you’ve become
You’re coming to appreciation for the way you feel inside, so come to an appreciation for the way you feel inside, because it’s just the way you feel right now and it’ll pass
It’s just the way you feel right now and it’ll pass
Yeep, yeep, yeep
This is a lesson that you have learned
This is a lesson that you have learned
This is a lesson that you have learned
This is a bridge that you have burned
This is a lesson that you have learned
This is a lesson that you have learned
This is a lesson that you have learned
This is a corner you have turned because it’s just the way you feel right now and it’ll pass
It’s just the way you feel right now and it’ll pass
It’s just the way you feel right now and it’ll pass
It’s just the way you feel right now and It’ll pass
Chronic illness, chronic anger, chronic shame, and chronic doubt
Lack of self-control is turning you into a burning house
Friends and loved ones keep their distance, rightly so until such time it is you come to an appreciation for the way you feel inside, come to an appreciation for the way you feel inside
Come to an appreciation for the way you feel inside
Come to an appreciation for the way you feel inside, because it’s just the way you feel right now and it’ll pass
It’s just the way you feel right now and it’ll pass
It’s just the way you feel right now and it’ll pass
It’s just the way you feel right now so let it pass
Let it pass, let it pass, let it pass
