Reflections in 2019:

I think I got what I was supposed to out of this song. It's full of little nonstandard mood swings that get very anxious and cerebral. The song represents the conspiratorial side of myself. The side that reads so far into things that they go off into their own alternate, or peripheral, reality with situations. Then it comes crashing down when reality ensues.

This again, like the previous song, highlights my virtues as a musician while placing my shortcomings as a lyricist and technician at the time on full display. I love the things I got at with the key changes in the B and C sections. I think there's something nice about the way the track ends with only the guitar and bass, hilariously both played by me. I think I got the idea to try that from a RHCP record.

During the recording of this song, a shelf fell on my guitars. I say during because we were hanging out for a while and it fell without a single note being played. I had to get them looked at. Ryan Kaywork was there. It really sucked the wind out of the day's proceedings.

lyrics

When we first met we talked all night
I drank your tears it felt so right
Two of a kind, a perfect pair
A match like this is oh so rare
But you never played your hand completely straight

We fought our battles back to back
When we were kids we never dreamed of looking back
But you never really felt the same

Looking around, afraid of knowing what I’d lost and who you’d found
And so it goes. Derek threw his dominoes away

Looking around, afraid of knowing what I’d lost and who you’d found
And so it goes. (When you left) Derek threw his dominoes into

Periphereality is all that it seems to be
Periphereality, but what does it mean for me?
